Catholic Homeschool Curriculum Approaches

What is Catholic homeschooling? Well, it's not so tough to define. As you may have guessed, it is homeschooling by those with the Catholic belief system ingrained into their teaching. Its very similar to Christian homeschooling or Secular Homeschooling in that each one of these has a belief system, usually religious, tied to their teaching. There are a few different methods for homeschooling Catholic style. Here's a brief overview of some of them:

*Charlotte Mason Homeschooling: Charlotte Mason was a British educator who believed in "living" books instead of textbooks. This approach to homeschooling focuses on books written by humans, individuals, not publication houses. She deems that children learn more form these living books because they are more interested. Also, this method of teaching heavily relies on children narrating or telling back what they have learned. Applying knowledge is not our job; it's the child's. However, getting children to narrate back to you verbally or written, aids the child in applying this knowledge.

*Classical Education: The main theory behind classical education is this: the teaching and learning style must change with the cognitive development of the child. The proponents of the classical style of education believe that one style of teaching cannot be effective for a 5 year old and also be used on a teenager. Therefore, there are three styles of teaching that are used throughout the child's learning process: Trivium, Analytical, and Abstract.

*Montessori Method: Promoted from the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, this strategy of schooling looks at duplicating intrinsic laws that a mere child faces in life. Thus the aspiration of the schoolteacher is control the conditions and not the offspring. It was discerned that young people who are left free to interface with their conditions established an intrinsic self-discipline and took pleasure in basic intellectual curiosity.

These are just a few of the approaches to Catholic homeschooling. If this type of homeschooling catches your eye, take a look deeper into a few of these methods to see if any are right for you and your homeschooled children.
