Some quick Statistics on Homeschooling

As with any controversy topic or item, there are plenty of researcher's willing and ready to prove each side wrong or right with research! Since homeschooling has been around a while, there have been plenty of opportunities and children for researchers to study and follow throughout their homeschooling educational experience. The facts and data used in this article come from research done by Dr. Brian D. Ray.

Before we get to more specific findings regarding homeschooled children, lets look at some of the general facts and trends with homeschooling.

*Homeschooling very well may be the fastest growing form of education in the United States. It has been growing at a rate of 7 to 12% per year!

*Currently, there are approximately 2 million homeschool students in the United States.

*Due to the fact that parents homeschool their children, there is less money that taxpayers have to spend since the kids are not in public school. The estimated savings in taxpayer dollars is around $16 billion dollars.

*Minorities have latched onto homeschooling and their involvement in homeschooling is growing. There are approximately 15% of homeschool families that are non-white/non-Hispanic.

Most research done has been surround the academic performance of homeschooling children. Its not surprising that people want to know if homeschooling measures up to the education children receive in public schools. Here is some information on this topic:

*When homeschooled students took standardized tests, their scores were on average 15 to 30 percentile points about that of public schooled children.

*The debate over having a parent or a certified teacher teach your child was disbarred when this study found that there was no different in academic performance whether the teacher was certified or non certified.

*Homeschool students routinely score above the average on SAT and ACT admission tests for colleges.

*Colleges are actively recruiting homeschooled students.

*Family income or the level of parental education had no impact on the children's inability to learn.
