Secular or Non-Religious Homeschooling

Lots of the talk about homeschooling surrounds those with religious views who have decided to homeschool their children. You know what I'm talking about, the Pagans, the Christians, the Catholics, and so on and so on. Then you have all of the curriculum that is associated with these various religions. The Classical method, the Seton method, the A Beka method, and so on and so on are some of these various religious based curriculums out on the market.

Well, believe it or not, and you may be one of them, there are some families who are deciding to homeschool who aren't religious or don't want to teach a religious based curriculum while education their children at home. These families may still be very involved in their various church's, church groups, etc, but they are not looking for religious based material to use in their home while educating their children. These types of families are known as families who wish to practice secular or non-religious homeschooling.

Many families opting for secular homeschooling can get discouraged because they are actually the minority when it comes to homeschooling. This means its tougher to find resources, support groups, and information on the internet to support your homeschooling beliefs. However, there are some resources put in place for secular homeschoolers:

*Growing Without Schooling: This is basically a secular magazine that has a variety of perspectives presenting within their issues. www.holtgws.com This magazine is also associated with a bookstore that houses plenty of non-religious resources for the pagan homeschooler.

*Yahoo Groups: There is a Yahoo email group for homeschool atheists, which can get you in contact with other families who are likeminded in your approach to homeschooling. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/homeschool_atheists This group will also be a gateway for curriculum reviews, idea sharing, and other information surrounding secular homeschooling.

The two resources listed should get you started on your journey of Secular Homeschooling. Don't get discouraged, you are not alone!
